Server Is Running but I Can’t Connect

Overview

If your Minecraft server shows as Running but you are unable to join, this is usually caused by a configuration or compatibility issue—not the server being offline.

Follow the steps below in order. Most connection issues are resolved within the first few checks.

Step 1: Verify Server IP and Port

Make sure you are using the exact IP and port shown in your game panel.

Correct format:

IP:PORT

Example:

123.45.67.89:25565

Forgetting the port
Using an old IP after reinstall

Step 2: Confirm the Server Finished Starting

A server may show Running before it is fully ready.

What to check

Open the Console

Look for a message similar to:

 [Server thread/INFO]: Done (0.133s)! For help, type "help"

If you do not see this, the server is still starting or has encountered an error.

Step 3: Check Minecraft Version Compatibility

Your Minecraft client version must match the server.

Plugins must be server-side only

Step 5: Check Whitelist and Player Permissions

If whitelist is enabled, only approved players can join.

How to check

In the console, run:

Also ensure you are not banned.

Step 6: Firewall, Antivirus, or Network Issues

Sometimes the issue is local.

Try this

Temporarily disable firewall or antivirus
Try connecting from another network
Ask a friend to test joining

If others can join but you cannot, the issue is local.

Step 7: Check Console Errors

Open the Console and look for errors when you attempt to join.

Common messages:

Connection timed out
Failed to bind to port
Outdated client
Incompatible FML modded server

Step 8: Restart the Server

A simple restart resolves many connection issues.
