How to Configure Your Garry's Mod Server (Startup Settings)

After purchasing a server from Avalanche Hosting, you can configure your server directly from the game panel.

This page allows you to control how your Garry's Mod server starts, including the map, gamemode, addons, and player limits.

Below is an explanation of each setting.

Startup Command

The Startup Command is the command used to launch the server.

In most cases, this field is pre-configured and should not be changed. It contains the parameters required to start the Garry's Mod server correctly.

Only advanced users should modify this command.

Map

The Map setting determines which map the server will load when it starts.

Example:

gm_flatgrass

Other common maps include:

gm_construct
gm_bigcity
gm_flatgrass

Changing the map will change the environment players spawn into when they join the server.

Steam Account Token

The Steam Account Token is required if you want your server to appear publicly in the server browser.

You can generate a token from:

Steps:

  1. Log in to your Steam account

  2. Generate a Game Server Login Token

  3. Paste the token into this field

Without a token, the server may still run but may not appear in the public server list.

Token Guide

Workshop ID

The Workshop ID allows you to install addons from:

Instead of installing addons manually, you can add the ID of a Workshop collection.

Example:

123456789

When the server starts, it will automatically download all addons from that collection.

Gamemode

The Gamemode determines the gameplay type of your server.

Default value:

sandbox

Popular gamemodes include:

To change the gamemode, simply enter the folder name of the gamemode installed on your server.

Max Players

This setting defines the maximum number of players allowed on the server.

Example:

32

Keep in mind that larger player counts may require more RAM and CPU resources depending on the number of addons installed.

Tickrate

The Tickrate determines how often the server updates player positions and game events.

Example:

22

Lower values reduce CPU usage, while higher values may provide smoother gameplay but require more server performance.

Most Garry's Mod servers use a tickrate between 22 and 33.

Lua Refresh

Lua Refresh allows the server to reload Lua scripts automatically.

When enabled:

This is especially useful for server administrators and developers working on custom addons.

For most public servers, this option can remain disabled.

Starting Your Server

Once your settings are configured:

  1. Click Start in the server panel

  2. Watch the console output to ensure the server starts correctly

If there are no errors, your server will be online and ready for players.
